Museum Row

A visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum is a car lover’s dream, with showrooms of classic vehicles and auto-themed artwork. Kids love the La Brea Tar Pits, where hot tar bubbling from the ground has preserved Ice Age fossils.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

LACMA’s encyclopedic collections have long made it one of the largest art museums in the country, but the 20-acre campus is undergoing some major changes. While Chris Burden’s photo-friendly Urban Light and the Renzo Piano-designed Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM) are crowd-pleasers, the permanent collections also deserve a closer look.

Get lost in the complex curves of Richard Serra’s Band or become hypnotized by Metropolis II, an installation that features 200 downsized skyscrapers and buildings surrounded by a humming, kinetic tangle of toy cars.

The Getty Center

The Getty Center is a hilltop museum complex featuring impressive art exhibitions and architecture. Designed by architect Richard Meier, the museum attracts visitors from across the world.

A must-see is Van Gogh’s Irises, housed in the West Pavilion. Be sure to also check out the Fran & Ray Stark Sculpture Garden. Central Courtyard, Exhibition Pavilion and the Central Courtyard are also worth a look.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History (LACNM)

Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, the largest natural science museum in western United States. The museum has a wide range of exhibits, including two huge halls with animal dioramas that may be familiar to visitors from their appearances in films. The museum hosts pop-up laboratories where visitors can learn about gemstones and minerals, or explore wildlife in the Nature Gardens.

The Los Angeles County Museum of African American History and Culture (LACMAABC)

This museum provides enriching educational programming that explores the art, history and cultures of African Americans. The campus has three exhibition galleries as well as a theater, sculpture court, and conference center.

Black American Portraits is a curated exhibit from the permanent collection of the museum. It reframes portraiture by putting Black subjects, sitters and spaces at its center. It also counters a visual culture that demonizes Blackness by celebrating love, abundance, family, and community.

California Science Center

Exposition Park is home to The California Science Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate that features dazzling edu-tainment. The museum’s IMAX Theater immerses film-goers in breath taking sights and sounds as they explore African wildlife, dive beneath the sea, or travel into outer space.

Admission to The California Science Center is free. The California Science Center is free to enter, but special exhibits such as Endeavour require timed entry tickets.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is one of the largest museums in the western United States. Dinosaurs and ancient sea life are on display in the Dinosaur Hall. Africa and North American Mammal Dioramas can be found, as well as a Nature Lab which explores LA Wildlife.

The kids will enjoy exploring the 4 1/2 billion year history. Check out the Butterfly Pavilion, Spider Pavilion, and special exhibitions.

The Getty Villa
